Brief History
Fred was the Chairman
of the Board and financial father of Bristol Mountain. He
partnered with two brilliant engineers from General Motors
who achieved the impossible
in 1963. Within nine months, they carved the trails, installed
a massive underground snowmaking, night lighting system, chairlifts,
and an award-winning lodge. This nine-month achievement earned
the respect of major ski area operators throughout the US.
In
the winter of 1964, the first year of ski operations, financial
goals failed. Trails were too narrow. Snow making capacity
was underestimated. In 1981, after a 17-year struggle, 20%
interest rates, the start of competitive private ski clubs
and a bad winter, Fred surrendered the ski area to the pressure
of a Rochester bank. His engineering partners went on to become
the largest snow making suppliers in the world. The ski area
went on to great success.
Bristol
Mountain boasts a summit elevation of 2200’ and
a base elevation of 1000’. The vertical of 1200’
allows Bristol to boast of the highest vertical between the
Catskill/Adirondack Mountains of the east and the Rocky Mountains
out west.
